Our School and The Takoma Guide

Mission

Our goal at the Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School (aka the Cooperative School, and simply, the Purpose School) is to foster awareness, compassion, and honesty in righting injustice and working towards equity and anti-racism; to address a national culture of misogyny, bullying, and harassment; to cultivate an environment where individuals of all abilities can thrive; and to understand, support, and affirm LGBTQIA2S+.

Vision

The Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School community is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our ongoing work is to strengthen this commitment and improve our community. We form connections, grow creativity, and share experiences to take care of each other. We are the village you can turn to for comfort and joy.

TPCNS Community

All families associated with the school contribute to growing Takoma Guide. The individuals mentioned here actively build the website, social media platforms, and continuously strive to keep Takoma Guide a one of a kind resource for our community.

History of Takoma Guide

In 1998, parents from the Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School (The Cooperative School) huddled around a dining table brainstorming ways to better serve their beloved city of Takoma Park while supporting the school. Thumbing through the yellow pages, an idea was born. Originally named the Takoma Park Business Directory and Survival Guide, this free local guide fostered the community by encouraging residents to patronize local businesses for over 20 years. The Guide became a near-constant fixture at the library, community center, and weekend open house events. The Guide not only listed more than 900 area businesses, it also included essential information on city services, schools, recreation, transportation, and other government resources (hence named The Survival Guide). These same parents who huddled at the dining table then took to the streets – literally. While some led efforts to forge a partnership with the city, others got on their bikes and rode every street, alley, and cul-de-sac in Takoma Park to list the city’s businesses, services, and draw delivery routes. Every May, two-, three-, and four-year olds and their families, with wagon and stroller, went door-to-door to hand deliver more than 6,000 copies of the Guide to every house and apartment building in Takoma Park. A one-of-a-kind community resource, the Guide gave residents a single source for information on government and city services and local businesses. Advertisement proceeds from The Guide supported The Cooperative School, which has served the community since 1942. Sensitive to the needs and impact the pandemic had on our local businesses, production of The Guide paused in 2020. This pause gave parents, now huddled around dining tables through Zoom, an opportunity to re-imagine The Guide to be more relevant, earth-conscious, and forward thinking. We welcomed you to the launch of TakomaGuide.org in 2022, a greener and digitized re-imagination of The Guide, still fostering community by encouraging an even wider audience to support local businesses.
