Eric Saul

When I moved to Takoma Park in the summer of 2007, I was working for a large architecture firm in Downtown Silver Spring designing multi-family projects. At that time, the Great Recession was just beginning. Having my hours reduced, and fearful of getting laid off like so many other architects nationwide, I started Saul Architects to make some extra income to make ends meet. My new business got off to a strong start thanks to the unexpected assistance of our new dog, a pug named “The Dude,” that we got at the same time that Saul Architects was launching.

The Dude

I met my first Takoma Park client while walking Dude along Long Branch trail, which then led to many more clients. Before I knew it, I had more work at Saul Architects than I did at my regular job working for someone else. By 2009, I was on my own full-time and never looked back.

Over the past 15 years, Saul Architects has designed over 500 projects in the DC area, including more than 200 projects in Takoma Park. I've worked on many residential additions and renovations, and even some commercial restaurants here, such as Cielo Rojo, Seoul Food, and Takoma Bevco.

Eric's historic house

To accommodate my growing business while still being able to work from home, in 2015 we moved just outside the city limits into a beautiful, historic house that has been, at various times, a school, a bed and breakfast, and even a convent.

Volunteering at the annual Children's Business Fair

I am blessed to live in such a great community at such an opportune time when a lot of change is happening, and I get to take part in that change. There’s no feeling like walking through Takoma Park and passing so many of the houses I have worked on, or running into so many of the people I have met because of my business. I also take pride in giving back to the community that helped me prosper, whether that be donating money to local charities, volunteering in the annual Children’s Business Fair, or coaching baseball for local players.

While I love being an architect – my mom will tell you that I’ve wanted to be one since I was 10 years old – I don’t plan to work forever. One day when I decide to hang up my architect hat, I hope to help other local architects prosper in Takoma Park by passing on my knowledge and experience. I’m grateful for this community, and especially grateful for the folks who have volunteered their time to operate this Takoma Park Business Directory, which has been a huge benefit to my career.
